Be careful to check where the nearest private doctors and hospitals are when you buy a private medical insurance policy in Spain. Insurance agents will only have one product they can offer and if you are not near a main town or city then the access to private doctors and hospitals across Spain will differ from company to company.
A while back, we were recommended to a couple after they had been sold a policy from a large medical insurance provider in Spain. They had a product from a company which had limited coverage where they were situated.
The product was from a very respectable company. Depending on how it compared to other providers and if it suited the clients’ situation we would not have had a problem recommended it. On this occasion it clearly did not suit.
Whoever had sold the product had not done their homework. The clients live in a rural area. This will restrict the availability of doctors and even more private hospitals with any company. In these cases, it requires a little bit of extra time to find an appropriate provider. Then the client can look at their options.
If you buy from an agent, then you are only being given access to one provider. If you buy from a broker, they will have many companies on their books.
‘X’ company might be cheaper but the doctors are 45 kilometres away.
‘Z’ is a little more expensive but whilst there is not a doctor in your village there are two in the next town, a seven-minute drive down the road.
This information is readily available to agents, brokers and clients alike. It is not a secret but you do need to spend half an hour or so looking into it. All the medical insurance companies in Spain provide internet access to their list of doctors and specialists. Most of the time the lists are in Spanish but if you use the services of a business like ours we will have checked this and gone through it before we come back to you with the quotations.
The client can then make an informed decision about which company they wish to go with.
